BACKGROUND
As a Tik-Tok influencer, my videos usually have an average of hundreds of thousands of views. Nevertheless, these videos with many likes often had no sense, nothing more than my trivial daily life. But when I tried to discuss real issues through my platform, TikTok immediately rejected and deleted most of those discussions. Even the few shots that had a chance to be sent out would get very few views due to a Tik-Tok background function that prevented the Chinese masses from seeing anything touching real issues.
Day after day, I realized that on this information highway, where everyone seems free to speak, but, in fact, countless "thought police" are lurking, and we Chinese people have no freedom to decide what to say. We are all trapped in an invisible ideology prison, with a powerful censorship system of AI algorithms and human censors constantly monitoring us.
The reality is that most people in this high-tech prison are unaware of the truth. I cannot directly tell them the fact either due to the very precise censorship algorithms.
In this terrible given situation, the only thing I can do is to use performance art to drop a hint to my audience, -- even this, I must be very careful and through the very ambiguous language of art; otherwise, my work won't get any chance to go public.
